Day trip from Kyoto -with JR Pass?

We will have a spare day in Kyoto and would like to use it to go for a day trip. We have a JR Pass.

However, we have already been to -and thoroughly enjoyed- the usual recommended places , viz Nara, Himeji, Hiroshima. Would appreciate any other suggestions for a one day's experience out of Kyoto.

If you didn't stop at Fushimi-Inari on your way to Nara, it's worth a visit, also on the same route perhaps Uji. Kobe is an interesting city if you're looking for city. From there you could go to the Arima hot springs area for a day.

If you're looking for culture and temples, Horyuji is amazing.

Then going south is Okayama and Kurashiki. I know someone who once did a very long day trip from Kobe to Shikoku Island, through Okayama, and managed to get to a few of the stops along the pilgrimage. Very long day though!

Or just take it easy for a day and wander around the Arashiyama district of Kyoto.

If you haven't by then, hit Kanazawa on a JR express. Kenrokuen Park will be great. As JTT suggests, visiting Kobe is also a good idea. Other alternatives will include doing a river cruise from Osaka Castle to Kaiyukan Acquarium.
