About Kobe Luminarie

I'm currently in Kyoto for 3 days and I noticed in the JR Train an ad about Kobe Luminarie that is starting today (6/dec/2012).

I don't have time to spend a day in Kobe in my schedule, but since there aren't many things that I want to do in Kyoto at night and night starts early during this time of the year, I was wondering if it is worth to go to Kobe tomorrow at afternoon/night to see the Luminarie. I thought about leaving at 6PM and coming back at 9PM. I have a free pass at JR trains and don't intend to spend the night there.

What do you think? Can you provide me some tips to get there from Kobe station and enjoy the event? I didn't had much time to look up information about it since I just found out about Luminarie 2012.

I would rather do a Hanatouro light up tour in Kyoto, but yes, you can go to Kobe, if you like.

If you have the JR Pass, take the Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe (you might be required to change at Shin-Osaka), then take the metro.

Mon-Thu 18:00 ~ 21:00

Fri 18:00 ~ 22:00

Sat 17:00 ~ 22:00

Sun 17:00 ~ 21:30

The Old Expats District (Kyu Gaikokujin Kyoryuchi 旧外国人居留地) and Higashi-Yuenchi Park. Walk from Kobe Metro Kyu-Kyoryuchi, JR/Metro Sannomiya or Motomachi station.

After that, you may return by Shinkansen from Shin-Kobe, or by JR Shinkaisoku Rapid from Sannomiya. You won't be allowed on Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen (aka Bullet) trains, so take Kodama, Hikari, or Sakura.

The trip will take about 30 mins by Shinkansen and 1hour by Shinkaisoku Rapid on conventional line (don't take the "normal" train).

Thank you Yobeekool! I plan to go to Hanatouro too, but it only starts at dec 8 :)

Is Shin-Kobe the main JR station in Kobe? (there isn't a "Kobe station"?). Just to confirm that I understood everything, I should go from Kyoto Station to Kyu-Kyoryuchi subway station, right? I did this route on Hyperdia:

Kobe has several stations. The high-speed train (Shinkansen) stop is Shin-Kobe; the central districts of Kobe city is around JR Sannomiya and Motomachi station, served by Shinkaisoku Rapid. There is a less major Kobe station which is in an older area of the town, but you won't be using that.

The viewing route starts near Daimaru Department Store which is closer to Motomachi Station but you can easily walk there from Sannomiya Station if that is where you end up. They like to keep the people all walking in the same direction so it starts there and you end up near the city hall building which is south of Sannomiya Station.

It will most likely be mobbed with people as tonight is the first weekend night so be prepared for that.

The length of the route is much much shorter than it used to be but it should still be interesting for something to do.

Hi, I will go to kobe luminarie on 16 dec 2012 from hakone but I dont have JR pass. Since I will buy hakone pass, I will go to kobe luminarie from odawara station. My question, from odawara , where to stop in kobe. Which train to take and where to buy the ticket. I will reach japan on 10 dec 2012 at narita airport.

I plan to stay one night in kobe.
