5 days in hiroshima

We are travelling to Japan with a group and have to spend 5 days in Hiroshima while the group attends a conference at the end of October. We are not going to the conference but need to be there before going on to Oita with the group. i would welcome suggestions on how to fill the time. We have booked a Comfort Inn but are open to suggestions for a better idea...but not too expensive. We would like to go to Mirayami????? where the Tori gate is, but it sounds like there are no inexpensive rooms to be had for an overnight there. Are there organized tours we could sign up for in Hiroshima and perhaps to some nearby places.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We look for organized tours because we are in our 70's and find it easer now.

Bibimbob, do you have the name of the ryokan where you stayed?

We do not have a JR rail pass because our travel around the country is arranged by our group. We are also visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara and Oita

Hi! I am a licensed English guide based in Hiroshima City.

When are you coming here?

Some of the things that you can see and do around Hiroshima are:

-Peace Memorial Park and museum

-Shukkeien Garden (Japanese garden) and Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum

-Kurashiki and Okayama (not in Hiroshima but nice places)

-Mazda museum (auto maker)

-Cook Okonomiyaki (Hiroshima pizza) yourself

Please don't hesitate to send messages to my account if you need to know more in detail.

Another interesting attraction in the Hiroshima area is Yamato Museum in Kure, half an hour by local train from Hiroshina Central Station.

I'm a petrolhead, so anything powered by an engine attracts me (I visited - and recommend - Mazda museum, too), but Yamato museum is imho something special.

there's also a (limited) english audio commentary available.

Very close to Yamato Museum you'll find the free Japanese Navy Museum, interesting if you want to step inside a modern submarine - a must for Navy enthusiasts!

Thanks to everyone for the info. We used Hiroshima Greeters for a guide to Miyajima and were completely satisfied. I would recommend them highly. We also took a day trip to Iwakuni, spent a day at the peace park, visited Hiroshima castle, Hondori mall and had the Hiroshima pancake twice. The food was excellent everywhere and the Comfort Inn, while very small, served us well.
