Kyoto to Hiroshima

Hi I am planning on visiting Japan in March with my 11yr old daughter, we have a JR pass for the last 7 days of our holiday, so we will have to purchase a ticket from Kyoto to Hiroshima/Miyajima Island while there, Can anyone help me with prices for a single train ticket from Kyoto to Hiroshima and the price of the ferry return? Also timetables of both? Thanks.

I've been doing research on this myself & the forum members have been very useful. To look up train prices & timetable, go to:

Here's info on going from Hiroshima to Miyajima:

On hyperdia the "seat fee" is a fee that MUST be paid.

In reality "seat fee" is not a good translation, the actual translation is a "Express Fee"

You must pay the base fare and the limited express fee if you ride the Shinkansen (bullet train) regardless if you had a seat reservation or not.

Can you tweak your itinerary around so you can use the pass on Kyoto to Hiroshima? I'm sure you know this already but your daughter only needs a child pass, which is a half price of adult's pass.

Hi Michelle,

Which Japan Rail Pass do you have? If you have a JR-East pass (for Tokyo etc) then yes, you will have to buy tickets. If you have a JR pass that covers all of Japan, then you can travel by “Hikari” bullet train at no cost. If you want to travel by “NOZOMI” Shinkansen then you have to buy tickets.

To get your tickets at no cost, show your JR Pass at the JR travel centre and the helpful staff will issue your tickets. There is one at Kyoto station. Or you can get the tickets at any other JR travel centre.

Use the http://www.hyperdia.com/en/ site for your train trip planning. Don’t forget to untick “NOZOMI” from the advanced searches.

We just got back from Japan and travelled from Tokyo to Hiroshima to Kyoto and back to Tokyo (and to and from Narita airport on the Narita Express (http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/nex/), all on the full JR Pass.

You can use the JR Pass to travel by train from Hiroshima station to Miyajima-guchi station, and then use the JR ferry.

Again, if your JR pass covers this area, getting to and from the island will be no cost. Just flash the pass and walk on through. How good is that pass!

BTW, you might want to try and time your visit to the island when you can see the tori gates at high tide so you can see it "floating".

Cheers,

Rikki.
