5 days in Hiroshima

Hi,

I'm planning my next trip to Japan this November. After a few days in Tokyo and Kyoto I was thinking of making Hiroshima my base and spending as much as 5 days sightseeing the city and the area around. Too much?

I know what there is to see in Hiroshima/Miyajima proper, but is there anything of interest outside?

Anybody have any itenarary suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I think it's a great idea to make Hiroshima a base and there are lots of places to see around and about. Depends on what you are into. At this time of year the autumn colors are great in many places and it's a great time to get out and about hiking, biking etc.

I'm packing for a flight right now, but here are a few things you might try from Hiroshima.

As well as Miyajima some interesting islands to visit.

Ninoshima

Okunoshima

Naoshima

Setoda as mentioned above or cycling all or part of the Shimanami Kaido

Onomichi which is a good starting point for the Shimanami bridges

Cycling along the rivers the many rivers that flow through Hiroshima

Kintaikyo Bridge in Iwakuni

Hagi (3 hour bus ride)

Tsuwano

Gokurakiji-yama and temple & arcadia village onsen

Mitaki Temple

Sandankyo Gorge, waterfalls and onsen

Mention what you are into and may be able to be more specific.

Cheers

Paul

I think 5 days in Hiroshima is way too long. I'd stay there for a few days and move on to Kyushu or Shikoku.

Nagasaki is worth your time:

There are several great day trips to do from Hiroshima.

A really nice trip from Hiroshima is to Hagi. Take the shinkansen to Yamaguchi, then a 1 hour bus ride to Hagi. Lots of history there, but also a wonderful castle ruins walk, it's a small, quiet town, some great shrines and a very interesting graveyard. The museum there explains the important role Hagi citizens have played in Japan over the years.

Another day trip from Hiroshima is to Yoshinogari on Kyushu. It's a reconstruction of an ancient village.

You can also get to Tsuwano, a small town up in the mountains, as another day trip. Okayama and Kurashiki are other easy day trips from Hiroshima, both well worth a visit.

I like Hiroshima city and have made it a base for local site seeing several times. Hotels and food are much cheaper there than in Tokyo or Kyoto, and it's such a friendly place to stay.
