GZ is a huge city without a specific " CBD" or city centre so this is a difficult question. What kind of walking/shopping do you wnat to do? What sort of budget? If it is general souvenir-type shopping, you might like Shamian Island. The Guangdong Victory is a 4 star hotel that often has good rates. If you want to be nearer to markets & Beijing Road, try the Holiday Inn or even the Landmark Canton. If you want high end shopping you need to be in the Tianhe district, where there are 5 star hotels too.

Sorry to ask but why do they call this area Shamian Island? Is that because the area is covered by rivers & small rivers?

Thank you HappyFeet. I wondered for so long what it was when I searched hotels by zones. Now I'm clear.
