Mid june visit

I only have a couple of weeks in mid June available for vacation. Is this a good time - seems the white nights might be interesting to experience. How crowded is it at this time? How far ahead should we look to book our hotel (probably will go for a "mini-hotel"

Pip, great time to come as the city never sleeps. It does get very busy so book well ahead. The only negative will be the lines of tourists to gain entrance to the museums etc.

Hello Pip

Of course with kids getting out of school in mid June, and the Cruise ships bringing 4-8,000 visitors a day from mid May to mid September, it can get crowded. This last summer saw many hotels not doing as well as normally and others fully booked all the way through the fall. The reason there were some unsed rooms was due to 23 new hotels opened sometime in 2005 in the city and 26 new hotels are promised to be open by summer. So good hotels got busier and the older tour grade hotels had a poor year. There will be rooms and some are at better prices due to the increased competition. More and more of the visitors arriving are doing so on cruise ships as that mode of travel is becoming dominate. Cruise passengers need to stay the night on the ship to enter the country without a visa. the mini-hotels are not such great bargains anymore with more mid-line full service hotels coming on line. Some of the best deals are through consolidators who block book thousands of room far in advance for real bargains. The SAS Radisson for example let hundreds of room-days to one large consolidator who had rooms for $120 or less in the summer when the hotel had a rack rate of $325. Another altnerative is a vacation apartment, usually very well located, reasonable and large, private accommodations with full kitchens in the $60-120 range. Generally speaking nicer apartments are nicer than mini-hotels in decor and features. There are some exceptions, and really nice mini's are available but they are not cheap. Casa Leto in the city center comes to mind.

Check the hotel discounters advertising on this forum because there are some good deals out there in this generally expensive market.

Make arrangements NOW for a hotel in June.

A mini-hotel is a great choice. There are many good ones near the Winter Palace and St. Issacs Cathederal. $100 will have private bath and cooked breakfast. Very nice.

What sleeping mask? Do you need it all the time, or only certain days? Suellen
