St. Petersburg in January

My sister and I (well-traveled and in our 60's) will be in St. Petersburg next January for 4-5 days. What can we expect in weather, and its impact on public and private transportation? What are the main sites like in January...shorter open hours? Open on fewer days? Well lit inside? Any other conditions we should anticipate for that time of year?

January. If not speaking about last year with its amazingly warm winter usual temperature in January is about minus 7-15 Celsius. Of course there is a chance to catch even minus 35 Celsius. Usually January is full of snow, relatively windy. Days are short as the sun raises at 9.30 and sets at 4.30 pm.

All museums have regular open hours. So inside the museums (which are usually well heated and well lit) you will find only advantages of being here in winter – less crowds, no queues, interesting temporary exhibitions (as the winter is full of cultural events).

In case of snowing you can find the city center full of traffic jams. Public transportation works in any weather conditions. Usually it is very warm in the subway, so get ready to take off your hat and gloves.

Enjoy your trip!
