2014 Parade

Those in Moscow today can see the military hardware to take part in the May 9 parade (APCs, tanks, and ICBMs) as it rumbles down Tverskaya tonight.

The column will leave its base outside the city at 7 pm and so will be in downtown around 9 or 10 pm, I believe, for a rehearsal in Red Square (which will apparently be closed off).

I like how these things come out of the blue, lol. Very early this year mind you.

The orchestras started their preparations when it was still some snow around, more than a month ago.

I caught them rehearsing festive tunes several times when on strolls to the Khodynka Field near where I live.

Since the military's route to Red Square passes through Khodynka, I may walk there again this evening to take some pictures.

PS. Khodynka, by the way, was the site for the first Soviet military parades.

It was also there that thousands of people were trampled to death during enthronement ceremonies for the last Czar, which went awry, and that Germany's Ribbentrop landed in his Messerschmitt to sign the infamous pact with Molotov.

You mean for the rehearsal of the drive-by?

It will look like this (the footage from the 2011 parade apparently shows the vehicles on the way back to their bases after the show) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jh8Buqn1GA4

If you mean the field itself, it is hard to say.

It is now all dug up and fenced off, with an enormous Achan shopping plaza, a metro station, and several office and apartment complexes all being erected at the same time, not to mention the CSKA stadium just off the field. Moscow's avant-garde museum of modern art is also going to be built there.

So it will probably be really worth to visit the place in a couple of years.

The Khodynka field was once Moscow's central airfield and the site of popular air shows attended by Stalin. It was also where the famous giant Maxim Gorky airliner crashed after a fighter plane doing a circle around it cut off its tail accidentally.

A few years back, it still was the place to visit for aircraft buffs, I now understand, as there was a unique cemetery of old Soviet military planes there. The old birds have since been all been taken away - many hopefully to a regional museum and its repair shops, but many apparently to the scrap heap - to clear the lot for construction projects.

I took pictures of the rusted machines when I sensed what was coming. Here are some of them -

awesome stuff, I admire how much you know about Moscow. What would you advise me to read so as to expand my knowledge about the city?

It will be my 5th Moscow trip from 6-12 May and I felt I might get bored. However, after reading all these stories, I certainly feel a lot more excited about going!

you know, my dream is to live there... but it might be a bit unrealistic given my position in a family-owned business here which is actually really pretty good.

I can't think of any book about Moscow in English to recommend. Sorry.

And I don't really know much about the city myself.

I draw most of what I post here from the Internet after doing a search for a particular narrow subject.

There are lovely bits of info scattered around the web here and there (in Russian), but no single place where they would be gathered, sifted and processed.

So the searches are always hit and miss, alas.

PS. The rehearsal today is evidently going to take place much later than I expected. In fact, a policeman told me he anticipated it all to happen well after midnight. I saw the signs, of course - side streets blocked by municipal machinery, sprinkler vehicles at the ready to douse the roads after tanks, and cops idling in squad cars, but the hardware will take another two or three hours to arrive. It may even be waiting outside the city for the traffic to quieten down.

Tobias,

I think you have been following the conversations here and are no stranger to kepi's posts. But for the newer comers perhaps here are some of my fav's from kepi:

kepi's walks 2012 (and musings):

Tobias, you've asked a lot of questions here, been to Moscow a few times, but have yet to put some sort of reports for us of curious minds, monsieur! I wish I had an hour over coffee with you ( and all would be revealed haha…) Here's something to consider: I am a quick study; let me substitute for you at the family business (hope it's chocolate!) while you fulfill your Russian dream...
