Puno/lake titicaca in December

We are planning a trip to Peru late December and want to go to Puno/Lake Titicaca and stay overnight on Amantani. How's the weather like there in the rainy season? Will we still be able to enjoy it? After that we are thinking about taking a bus tour to Arequipa, maybe colca canyon on the way. Please let us know if you think this will work out.

During December in the highland of Peru, you can certainly expect rain. It wont necessarily rain all day but there is more chance, and when it does come it could be heavy. If you are prepared for it, then I would still go. Amantani offers a great experience. Plus during this time of the year the nights are warmer, which will also help on the overnight sleep on the island!

I would definitely recommend a night or two in the Colca Canyon, and a few nights in Arequipa. Both of these areas are growing in popularity with tourism, but still not the most trodden path.

Should not be a major problem.

Come and enjoy.

Thanks TotallyLatinAmerica and xochitl for the information. That makes me feel a lot more comfortable traveling there in December. =) We have the following tentative plan. We'd love to spend more time, but we have a tight schedule. Based on the following plan, do you think we have enough days in cusco/sacred valley area? Should we save one day from somewhere and give cusco/sacred valley/machu picchu 5 days? To save that one day we can take a night bus from cusco to puno and skip the sites on the way for Day 6, or we can skip colca canyon overnight stay, or take one day out of lima? What do you recommend?

Thanks again for your advice. =)

12/17 Day 0: fly from sfo, leaving at 11:35am

12/18 Day 1: arriving at 6:50am, lima city sightseeing

Cusco (altitude about 3400)/scared valley/machu picchu (altitude about 2700)

12/19 Day 2: morning flight to cusco, see around cusco a bit, then train to aguas calientes, stay at aguas calientes

12/20 Day 3: Machu Picchu, late afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo (stay there or stay at Urumbaba)

12/21 Day 4: back to Cusco, on the way do Moray, Salina salt mine etc

12/22 Day 5: Cusco, Sacsayhuaman/Pisac/chichero near cusco etc

Puno/lake titicaca:(altitude about 3800)

12/23 Day 6: tour bus ride to Puno, several stops on the way

12/24 Day 7: lake titicaca/uros/ stay overnight on the island Amantani

12/25 Day 8: Amantaní & Taquile Island, overnight bus cusco

Colca canyon/arequipa:

12/26 Day 9: bus to chinay, colca canyon

12/27 Day 10: colca canyon, bus to arequipa

12/28 Day 11: arequipa, arequipa -> lima flight (haven't checked if we can find a late afternoon flight)

12/29 Day 12: Lima

12/30 Day 13: fly back to sfo in the morning
