Traveling San Blas islands without a guide/tour company

Can you island hop/visit without being part of a guided tour/sail group? My boyfriend and I would like to spend about a week between different islands on our own schedule. Basically, are there boats throughout the islands that will provide transportation without having a tour scheduled or booked? We are fly by the seat of our pants travelers and just want to take the experience as it comes, not as someone has laid out for us to follow. Any input is appreciated! thanks!

If you look at the various lodges on various islands that you want to visit then you can contact them about getting power boat transport. The island group stretches over a long distance and thus your question would be impossible to answer without knowing where you want to start, visit, and end. In general, most any island area is inhabited by people with boats and cash will get you somewhere. If you have a waterproof duffle or a trash bag to put your pack in, then you will probably have more options. There are cell phones in most places so you can rely on the lodge to find someone who wants to get you where you want to go.
