What is there to do/see in Walvis bay

I will be calling at Walvis bay on a cruise ship in November and was wondering wht there is to see and do not far from the cruise port. Are there any nice (and safe) beaches nearby? How safe is it for a woman on her own to wander about? Trying to decide whether to explore for a few hours on my own or put up with being herded about on a ship's excursion

Thanks

Go on the ship's excursion.

Nearby are dolphin, seals, flamingoes, hyenas, more seals, and lots of sand.

Long beaches, but you probably don't want to sunbathe.

I would consider renting a car with a driver/guide maybe as you don't have a lot of time. Then you can go to see the dunes (for example Dune 7) or/and just drive along the beach watching seals, flamingos, pelicans and other birds and even jackals on the beach, depends on what you'll have a chance to meet :). We had a great time doing this last month. Beaches are huge, beautiful and wild, but I didn't feel like sunbathing there and definitely not swimming :) just walk or drive and enjoy!

There is an incredible boat trip available in Walvis Bay called the Dolphin Cruise. We saw two humpback whales swimming alongside our boat,a heavyside dolphin(native to Namibia),a bottleneck dolphin,a huge seal colony, and lots of comorants. The best part of the tour was having these enormous 500 pound fur seals clamber aboard the boat to be fed fish and petted by the astounded passengers. One could hardly believe how tame they were,The passengers also enjoyed South African Champagne as well as oysters on the half shell.
