Essaouria in December???

Hi there,

I have been to Essaouria before but always in the summer not the winter. Could anyone help me out with what it is like in Decmber weather wise, but also whether things are open visiter wise (bars, cafes, restaurants, haman etc).

I know I can find accomodation, but it would be a shame to get there and find all the usual haunts closed!

Many thanks for any help,

hi most of your haunts will be open, but it does tend to be coldish and windy.

you will also find that the seafood stalls by the port to be quiet and lonely.

now this mayb have changed as they moved the stalls into new ones ,but i do expect that they would be closed.

Hi Vics123, We were in Essaouira over Christmas a couple of years back and agree with other post comments that it was particularly windy (we're talking hair flying back at 90 degree angles!) Especially towards the port and main square. Our hotel that we finally found after trudging to several places which were all full up, was chilly- and I mean chilly! Perhaps the fact that it was a stone building with wooden shutters ( that didn't quite shut :) and ceramic tiling (all great combinations for boiling temps.!) also made it more so...I made up for it though by buying 3 woolly hats in the market! Because it's a small place, I think it's better when there's not too many people around, especially with the narrow streets...All the restaurants we walked past and ate at were open- since you've been before, you're probably aware of the many French expatriates who reside there, and hence, it probably isn't as dead as you might expect in other places around the world that rely heavily on the tourist seasons...Well, at least you'll be prepared weather-wise before arrival! Hope info helps, P.

I agree with Perkypat’s comments. We were there Nov/Dec last year, the year before, and we’re going back this year. Most things will be open, there won’t be crowds and when the sun shines it will be warm and wonderful. The light at that time of year is beautiful; the town will glow like a jewel. BUT it will be windy, cold and probably wet.

I was in town last December looking for a house to buy (which i actually bought on my last trip in March). The weather was fine in the day once the sun was up and stayed that way till it set about 5pm. I was staying in a big riad that was quite damp and needed some heating... as a result we tended to eat about 8, and be tucked up in bed by about 10.

As there are less tourists, its easier to get your pick of places to eat, which all appear open, but i think you get a bit more hassle from the shopkeepers as they are selling less and therefore need to be a bit more insistent to close deals !

Im going back to spend a couple of weeks there this December to work on the house and have a quiet christmas away from the madness and commercialism in England.

Best Wishes

Essaouira in December will be between 16 and 22 degrees but of course as always windy. If you get a rainy patch it can be rather damp and chilly as nowhere has heating. Everywhere is open and Essaouira is not by any means empty or deserted.
