Hello,

There are not a lot of great diving sites close to Kuching/Damai. The water around Kuching has some sand mixed up in it and isn’t considered ideal for dives or snorkeling. The primes dive sites in east Malaysia are generally considered to be in Sabah although some areas near Miri are getting more popular. The best option, although not spectacular for dives, would be Satang Island. www.sarawakforestry.com/htm/snp-np-satang.asp

They have a decent reef and the turtles can be quite spectacular. A couple companies along the waterfront offer trips including dives here. The launching point is close to the Damai area. Another thing to consider would be dolphin watching. Sarawak is home to the Irrawaddy dolphins. You can read about them on wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irrawaddy_Dolphin and by a blog http://dolphinsofsarawak.blogspot.com/

These can be seen by Kayak and perhaps the best operator would be a local hobbyist who has made it a part time business Francis Ho. His web site is http://www.kuchingkayak.com/

Good luck and enjoy your stay

Agreed, waters off of Damai are not clear and I think you'll be really disappointed with scuba diving and snorkeling in this area.

Also take a look at Camp Permai, just next door to the Holiday Inn Damai for more adventure activities. They now offer a few options for kayaking trips too, though I think seeing the Irrawaddy dolphins is the way to go.

Since you're in the area, you should check out Buntal and Santubong town. It'll give you a good view into village life and excellent seafood restaurants at Buntal. Bako National Park for the proboscis monkeys is great too.
