Trips to marine park

Hi,

I will be in KK staying at the Tanjung hotel in late March.

I'd like to visit the five islands in the marine park.

Which is the best island in terms of coral.

I've read somewhere that one of the islands has a bade reputation in terms of its population.

Are all of the islands safe enough to visit?

Regards,

Rick

Hi Rick,

There's 5 islands in the nearby Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine park. The Tanjung Aru hotel does have a small jetty with some chartered facilities available to take you to the islands, or you can also go to the Sutera Harbour Resort's Marina, or to Jessleton Point, the public harbour at the far end of town - both feature regular ferry shuttles at about RM30 to RM40 return per person.

There are good coral at the smallest islands, Sulugh and Mamutik, as well as well decent coral on Police Beach on the quiet side of Gaya Island, which is also the biggest.

It's at Gaya Island where there is a fairly sizable water village made up of largely immigrants - as in other parts of the world, immigrants here also bare the brunt of everything that goes wrong. Visiting the islands, however, is a safe practice.

Manukan island is the most developed island in terms of infrastructure. They have a nice restaurant, daily BBQ lunch and upscale accommodations. Sapi is second, but only features a BBQ lunch and no permanent facilities other than the ranger stations. Mamutik and Sulugh, apart from basic shelter is deserted, and Gaya has a lot going for it on various sides.
