Snorkelling in Sabah

Can anyone recommend any particularly good snorkelling spots? We hope to travel in October with our three kids, ages 7-13. Thanks.

Hi buffalou, good snorkelling spots can be found in the marine park paradise of the five islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman park in Kota Kinabalu.

The five islands are Gaya, Manukan, Mamutik, Sapi and Sulug.

As Sulug is much more remote, richer coral life over here.

At Sapi, glass bottomed boats are also available to get a closer look at the coral and marine life-without getting one's feet wet; but the tempation to jump overboard is irrestible.

Hi buffalou

Yup, easiest to get to is Manukan & Sapi, quality of the snork depends on the choppyness of the sea and wind direction, but is usually quite good.

The remoter islands are great, but less developed.

Gaya's Police Beach is probably the stretch with the largest, most beautiful coral in the TAR park. It's quite isolated, so pack a basket with food & drink and go have fun.

Apart from the glass bottom boats mKiaratravel mentioned, both Sapi and Manukan also have underwater walks. Assisted by a diver, you wear a large, glass-bubble hat thing and actually walk around on the bottom of the ocean. No dive gear needed, no experience - they show you how to do it and off you go. Can be booked on either island and is well worth the effort.
