accomodation and getting about

I have read peoples opinions on the various accomodation but am a bit confused. When talking about the Tanjujg Aru is that Shangri-La TA?? Also how big is the City Center and how do you get there from your hotel.

Other questions are: Are there plenty of dining places other than those in Resorts, what would you expect to pay for a meal? Is there night clubs or evening entertainment? Do you barter when shopping? Do hawkers hassle you or do they only sell food??Is it straightforward to plan day trips once there??

Thank You

Hello Versary,

Shangri La runs several hotels around the world and two completely different resorts in Kota Kinabalu. Their names are:

1. Tanjung Aru

2. Rasa Ria

You can find the Shangri La web site here

http://www.shangri-la.com/en/index.aspx

They are two completely different resorts located quite a distance from each other. The Tanjung Aru is the resort that is much closer to the town of Kota Kinabalu (called KK by the locals). Here is a very basic city map of downtown Kota Kinabalu.

There are many places to eat in KK. Prices for local fare will be under RM 8 per person for a meal. Prices at hotels will start at RM 35 per person. You will find quite a mix of local places and places designed for the tourist.

There are a couple night clubs in KK and many bars. Do not expect to get cheap alcoholic drinks in most of Malaysia.

Yes you barter when you shop for anything.

Food hawkers aren’t aggressive. Some sellers at night markets will be aggressive in selling but they aren’t as sleazy as the ones in Bali or Thailand.

Planning day trips once there is very easy unless it is a busy holiday time like Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year, etc. These can be done in town or at your hotel.

Also the TANJUNG ARU in Kota Kinabalu is not to be confused with the TANJUNG RHU in Langkawi. They are two completely different places.

Tanjung means "cape" like "cape of good hope" or "cape cod".

Hello again,

No it is not within walking distance to town but it is a short drive. Rental cars are very cheap and worth it to me, I also think the hotel runs a shutle service for a very low fee, there is a public bus that goes by, and of course you could also get a taxi pretty cheaply but prices do go up late at night.

Tanjung Aru runs frequent shuttle buses, traffic in the city can be a killer, so taxi's are often a better way to get around. Taxi's don't run meters, so agree the price with them, e.g inside the city centre it should be max RM6.

For day tours, book them in town instead of your hotel, it's usually cheaper, and the options are better. You can try Borneo Information Centre in Wisma Sabah, which is an independant advisor and booking centre.

Are there any restaurants or hawker centres within walking distance to the Tanjung Aru and is there anywhere to eat breakfast other than the hotel that is quite close.

Thank you for your help.

Tanjung aru have a hawker centre in walking distance, there you can eat very cheap, and at night get a cheap beer or 10.
