Kota Kinabalu shopping

Going to Kota Kindabalu in the christmas holidays and was wondering what the shopping is like. I am looking for handbags, clothing, tingkets, sunnies and one off pieces of jewellery. Please help me find the best shopping spots and the best places to buy. Thanks heaps

Depends how much you want to spend of course and whether you want designer labels or not. Best shopping is probably fourth floor of Centrepoint Shopping Centre. It is quite expansive and plenty to look at and try. On first floor there is a big women's shop facing main road. Cannot think of name. Would try Waawaasan complex as you get into main part of city. It has one floor of a very well known name in South East Asia which has most of top labels. I think those two are your best choices. If you want to spend less dollars have a look at Karamunsing Shopping Centre close to city, Wisma Merdeka towards end of main road in city which I think may be your best bet for sun glasses and KK Plaza not far away facing waterfront.

Jewellery.. for a good buy, the "Pasar Filipina" is the place to go. All types of pearls, and crystals mixes can be found there. It is the place to purchase crafts, trinkets, basket and woven bags..

Check out also the Gaya Street market every sunday in the middle of the town for trinkets and more pearls.

In Sabah at the moment and shopping is not that great. There are night markets with the fake stuff but the variety is not there. Don't ecpect the shopping here to be the same as Bali or Thailand. Off to Gaya street markets on Sunday so there may be alot more variety

By the way...weather is perfect here. Only a few hours of rain in the last 6 days and that was at 8pm last night.

Agree with some of the points highlighted. It is definitely different kind of shopping atmosphere in KK comparing with that in Bangkok or Bali. You can buy some Malaysian-made clothing from some of the department stores in Centrepoint, Ngiu Kee in Wisma Merdeka, Parkson in Wawasan. There are also lots of boutiques in Centrepoint, Wawasan and Wisma Merdeka sell lots of imported clothing from Hong Kong, Korea, France etc. It depends what you budget for. There are few jewellery shops in Wisma and Centre point are good for gold-buying. They have all kinds of designs to suit you.

Just returned from KK then home via KL.

The shopping in KL as 100 times better so if a stopover is poss that's the go.
