Sandakan - Sipadan travel time and initiary help

Hi.

I was wondering if the following initiary is doable on 8-9 days. Land in Sandakan (Sepilok orangutang sanc.) - then travel to Lahad Datu (rainforest lodge for 2-3 days - any recommondations on lodge? How do we get there - bus? direct flight? Taxi? How long does it take?) and then get to Tawau (Sipadan diving 2-3 days if I will get permit - again, travel time and options on this) then fly back to KK. I realise it will be short and hectic but I would love to experience the jungle and the magnificent diving.

I would be very grateful for any help and input before I plan any further. I might skip Sandakan and just go straigt to Lahad Datu and hopefully see the Orangutangs there.. - any advice on this?

Yes, it is possible to do all that in 9 days. You may want to consider 2d 1n for Sandakan, 3d 2n for Lahad Datu and 3d 2n for Sipadan/Mabul. 9 days will include the travel times and also enough time for you to relax before your flight out from Tawau.

Sandakan/Lahad Datu is about 4.5 hours by land, Lahad Datu/Semporna is about 2.5 hours by land, Semporna/Mabul is about 40 minutes by boat and Semporna/Tawau airport is around 1.5 hour.

You can contact the following for Sandakan and Lahad Datu arrangements.

Sandakan to Lahad Datu is 2.5 hrs by road (180 km - by coach or taxi only; no flights), and from there to Semporna (the gateway to Sipadan, not Tawau) is about 2 hours (approx 140 km), also by road only. From Lahad Datu to Tawau it's also 2 hours (150 km). In that part of the state the only flight would be between Sandakan and Tawau, on Malaysia Airlines.

Note the Sepilok Orang Utan sanctuary is in Sandakan, and I'm not aware of any orang utan place in Lahad Datu.

Hi Zeldajenta,

Why not do a 3D/2N at Sandakan at Sepilok Nature Resort.. You can see the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre which is just next door to the resort and also go on a Labuk Excursion to see the Proboscis Monkey..after that do at least a 4D/3N stay at Kapalai Resort (15 mins boat ride to Sipadan). You can fly from Sandakan to Tawau and we provide Airport transfer.

Thank you all help. I've actually contacted Downbelow and looks like we're doing a 3D/2N stay at BRL and then 4D/3N at kipali dive resort. Finger's crossed we get to see some wildlife then and get permit for Sipidan diving. We're going to fly in from Manila - does anyone know if there are any flights to Sandakan from the Philippines - I've checked Asia airlines but they only seem to fly to KK. Thanks again for helping out.

Hi Zeldajenta,

That's great to hear! In regards to flights, there's no direct flight from Manila to Sandakan. You can either stop over in KL or in KK, thereafter catch a flight to Sandakan (MAS/Air Asia). :)
