budget independent or tailor made trips

I wondered if someone could help...

My partner and I are planning a trip to Borneo in March. There are a number of things we want to do:

Climb Mt KK

Visit Sepilok Orangutan Santuary

Visit turtle island

Stay in a Rainforest lodge and spend some time doing river cruises along the Kinabatangan River.

We want to finish off the trip with 4/5 nights in the Rasa Ria at the end to relax.

Aside from that we don't mind too much about what accommodation we stay in. We need to keep costs down so it can be basic. We like the sound of places like Uncle Tan.

How much do you think we can expect to pay for this? We really need to keep costs down. Presumably it's cheapest to do it independently, but I'm not sure how to go about the sepilok-turtle island-Kinabatangan River portion of the trip independently.

Could anyone offer any advice on how to do the trip independently or recommend any companies that will offer cheap tailor-made trips?

Thanks

Hi

With the pound being so very, very weak you might fing that things are not as cheap as they should be, and at the moment everything appears at least 20% more expensive than they actually are.

Much is possible independantly. Google the various names to see what you can find or refer to sabahtourism.com/sabah-malaysian-borneo/… for some good pointers.

Independently might not be cheaper, but it does offer you more flexibility. From Kota Kinabalu take the 30mins flight to Sandakan, taxi to Sepilok in time for the 11am feeding or why not stay overnight at one of the hotels near Sepilok and go to the 3pm feeding which is less crowded. Sepilok is closed to the public between 12 and 2pm. Sandakan is also the best base for Kinabatangan River and Turtle Island as well, not forgetting the Proboscis Monkeys and or http://www.uncletan.com/. Some places may not accept independant travellers and will only allow tours so they can control the impact of tourism.

If you are looking to keep costs down then the Rasa Ria might not be the place for you. The hotel is beautiful and the setting is truly beautiful but the food and beverages are expensive, and with the very, very weak pound are making things appear very, very expensive.

Happy holidays and Good luck.
