5 day 4 nights in Penang

Hello all, I will be in Penang in mid Dec for 5 days, arriving on a Sat afternoon.

Any suggestion for a rough itinerary with food ,activities, cultural sightseeing?

Are weekends in Penang especially quiet or busy ? I have read both versions somewhere..

I'm also thinking of going to the penang National Park. What's the best way to get there from central Georgetown?

Any advice is welcome. Thanks so much !

Weekends on Penang can be very busy. Everyone goes shopping so the malls are busier than normal, and traffic can be bad. Add to that people coming up from KL, over from Ipoh or or down from Thailand for the weekend and the population swells.

If you only have a few days make sure you get up to Kek Lok Si and do Penang Hill on the same day. There's plenty to see and do in Georgetown with all the Chinese temples and Kongsis, Mosques, Indian temples etc. There are several museums, mansions and historic buildings to visit, craft makers to observe, and places like the Esplanade and Fort Cornwallis to discover. You'll probably want to spend a morning walking Georgetown seeing all the wall paintings and iron rod sculptures. Again you can pick up maps which show where they all are. If you get stuck go to the Eidelweis cafe on Armenian street. Not only is it a good place for a drink and something to eat, but there's a good stock of tourist brochures towards the back.

Go up to the Gurney Plaza area and visit the Thai and Burmese temples. Pick up a guide map at the airport and you'll be spoilt for things to do.Food is everywhere and one of the joys is finding places for yourself.

You can get up to the National Park by bus.

You might be interested in Penang escape theme park, its nothing like any other theme park I've been around the world, you're so close to nature, its cool and fun and involves a lot of athletic activities.

Best hawker food would be new York road, starts around six, but make sure you go early cuz it can get really congested...the food is too good ;p there's butterfly farm, its very pretty, and the blue mansion, a nyonya culture building...you can even stay there! And Penang botanical garden in gottlieb garden is a great natural park. Khoo kongsi is very pretty so is floating mosque. If you go to batu ferringhi you can go to escape, there'sthe most beautiful beach for a picnic, and the floating mosque to look forward to. Escape theme park provides free transport service there and back from most of batu f hotels. you can climb up or take the cable car up Penang hill for great scenery. Have a nice trip!! :)
