Weather late September/October

Currently planning a trip to KL and Penang or Langkawi from 21 September to 3 October but understand that it is Monsoon season?? just want to check what that actually means the weather will be like? Are we likely to have days on end of constant rain and no sun, or is it more short sharp showers and then the sun will be out for most of the day?

Keen not to have to spend the majority of the trip under cover sheltering from the rain... also, is temp still hot?

Current plan is to have 3 nights in KL and then to the Parkroyal resort in Penang for 8 nights - any views/comments on that more than appreciated also.

Many thanks

It is monsoon season most of the time in some part of Malaysia at anytime of the year. A monsoon is just a wind, it doesn't necessarily mean rain. For example, the South-West Monsoon is mostly a dry wind, that tends to bring smoke and haze from Sumatra, depending on what the Indonesians are burning in their plantations.

The North-East monsoon blows from November to March and the South-West Monsoon blows from June to September. The North-East monsoon affects the East Coast more than the West Coast, and the South-West Monsoon the West Coast more than the East Coast. Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi are all on the West Coast.

In fact, the inter-monsoon periods of April-May and September-October tends to have higher precipitation in the West Coast compared to the so called monsoon seasons.

Even when it rains, generally you will still tend to get your average 5-6 hours of sunshine per day at some point. Heat and humidity are constant throughout the year, even when it pours down it is normally still warm. If you are staying in urban areas like Kuala Lumpur or Penang, rain is less of an issue. When it rains, just pop into a shopping mall or relax indoors.

Previous comment is spot on. Temperature will be around 30 C. every day.
