Public Holiday

We are travelling to Penang on the 4th June to 9th June (our first trip there).

There is a public holiday on the Monday - King's celebrations.

What will this mean in Penang? For instance, will the shops/public transport/restuarants etc. be closed? Will there be special activities on?

King's "official" birthday falls on the first Saturday in June so this year, it's 5 June. Business as usual.

I notice there is also a public holiday on Sat July 10th during our stay - should we expect shops or anything else to be closed?

Thanks in advance.

Hi jessar,

As mentioned by MK4872, generally it's business as usual in Malaysia on public holidays (not like here in Perth). Banks and Government Offices will close (like in Perth/Australia), but most shops remain open (unlike in Perth).

Even at times like Chinese New Year, not everything closes. The smaller shops run/owned by Chinese people close for a few days but those run/owned by Malaysian/Indian/Western etc remain open.

Public transport still runs, and I think it even runs pretty much to the same schedule as non-public holidays, it really shouldn't interfere with your trip much, if at all.

Thanks for the reassurance....not that it really matters too much, I am sure we can still find plenty to do without any shops....

I think for those of us who live in places like Perth where the only shops that open are those in the city centre, where the shopping malls don't open, and where the city basically shuts down over a public holiday, it's pretty normal to query whether it is the same elsewhere in the world.

hehehe!

You would be right about that Lise, coming from Perth myself.

I guessed you were from Perth - the screen name and location gave it away (LOL). There is quite an impressive number of "Perthites" on this forum - must be because we like to escape to more exciting, historic, modern, bustling locales than sleepy little Perth. That said, wouldn't give up the laid back lifestyle we have here!

For us the convenience and cost of travel from Perth is a big deciding factor. Air Asia and Jetstar are so cheap. We found a $220 pp return fare on Royal Brunei to Brunei last year and that was an interesting place.
