Would You exect to see rough seas, strong winds and lots of rain in December / January???

Heck NO!

Don't know where you got this from as if you had read the question right at the top of the forum called 'Weather - don't ask read here' or have a look at the FAQ Weather on the right - right at the bottom of the Top Questions.

But to reiterate . . . . The northeast monsoon or prevailing wind blows between October and March and affects the East side of the Peninsular and Malaysian part of Borneo, whilst from May to September the southwest monsoon or prevailing wind affects the West side of the Peninsular. The times of year the wind directions change can, and does vary by weeks. This does mean that out of monsoon / prevailing wind that the other side of the country is far less prone to rain / unsettle weather!

The monsoon wind does not mean it will rain all day or even every day, just that the wind is in such a direction that there is a much higher chance of rain. Some areas do close [like the Perhentians] as the direction of the wind will mean the sea is rougher. Having said that, weather in the entire region tends to be unpredictable regardless of the monsoon, it is the tropics! With the monsoon wind, its luck, you might see nothing and it will be hot and sunny or it might rain a little or a lot. Some areas have a fairly even spread of rain, and others tend to only have rain during the monsoon.

Rain is a common event in Malaysia, when it rains it rains very heavily and nothing like we normally experience in the UK. It will rain for an hour or three, and then it clears and the sun is out, then it might rain in the evening, then sun in the morning, etc. Depending on which part of Malaysia you are visiting you might see rain and / or thunderstorms daily, but it lasts an hour or so, then the sun it out again. Plus the whole time it’s hot and humid!! It is the tropics, so expect a mix, but you should see the sun.

It will rain most days in Malaysia, it is the tropics. Been there in what was supposed to be the wet season and not seen a cloud, been there when it is supposed to be dry and seen rain most days for a while. http://uk.weather.com/ is a good website to give an indication on what weather is like, and some historical data to what to expect.

The luxury single resort of Pangkor Laut is on the west, so is more likely to not not see any rain / unsettle weather during December / January!

Have fun!!!
