Peaceful time or 'castaway' experience?

Hi all, and thanks for help so far. We're looking at booking a place in the far north of the island - about 3km north east of the four seasons. It appeals because it's a nice looking house - but the trade off I suspect could be the isolation. Does anybody know how difficult it would be to get to any eating places, mini marts etc? And travelling time to say the ferry terminal? Thanks in advance!

Thanks again for advice Lesley - would your recommend hiring a car from the airport to drive up to the top end? Or is the traffic more of a problem down around the airport?

Also do you know of anywhere to buy fresh seafood up there? The house we are staying in has a BBQ so maybe in the evening we can stay in and have a cook-up! Cheers!

Hi

There are several car hire desks at the airport so you can hire a car as soon as you arrive. The traffic is not a problem anywhere on the island.

The nearest night market to where you are staying is on Friday nights at Ulu Melaka. You may be able to get fresh seafood there.

Hi,

Tell you the truth, better get the rented cars so you have the flexibility moving around. While Langkawi had a taxi service but to goes/back from you place is quite daunting.a small and compact car will do the job. those area in northern island is still unspoilt ( i hope) and quite remote from other area like Cenang, and Kuah.

Have just found out that Scarborough Fish & Chips are open until 9.00pm every evening but they are closed on Mondays.

Lesley, thank you, Scarborough may get a bit of a work out! The Friday Market we will just miss but maybe we can find something else.

the friday market is at padang lalang, but you say you will miss that. there is a good wet-fish market at padang matsirat, open every morning and evening. but this is half-an-hour drive away, at least.

you may find fresh fish on sale at some of the small shops at padang lalang.

scarborough fish and chips was not so good on our recent visit. my friend, who was working, had to have her meal in a takeaway container because we waited more than an hour and a half for it to arrive. and many of the items were not available. this was not a 'one-off' - recent reviews are saying similar things.

ok - for the fish market, from roundabout at padang lalang, take the 112 ulu melaka road for about 8 miles till you reach a t junction. turn right for one mile to roundabout. take second exit through kampung padang matsirat. turn right at traffic lights, market about one mile on right.
