Lost in Okinawa

Visiting my daughter here. She just arrived in January, had her first baby this month. Her husband is stationed here. She knows very little about the island. I would love to find a nice spot to take her for a manicure, pedicure and good haircut. We have tried travelling around a little, but off the base, everything is written in just Japanese. Makes it hard to figure out just driving around! Any suggestions!! Would also like to hear of places just worth looking around at!

Hi happywanderer1,

You should be able to find nice manicure/pedicure and haircut places in a town like Naha or Nago. Are you guys far from those towns?

Re sightseeing, I’d recommend Shuri Castle and Shikinaen Garden in Naha.

Shuri Castle

If you guys are near central Okinawa, you may want to visit Nakagusuku Castle Ruins (http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7107.html) and Nakamurake Residence (http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7108.html)

And, don’t forget to visit nice beaches!

We are not that far from Naha. The main problem I'm having is away from the Air Force base, everything is written in Japanese. I can't tell driving by what the business actually is. Enjoying seeing Okinawa. It really is very pretty!!

Welcome to Japan! (LOL!)

Manicure/pedicure places are usually called “nail-salon” (ネイルサロン) in Japan. Here are some examples.

“Y.S. Nail” -- okinawakuukan.com/index/…index.html

“Nails By Yamauchi” -- okinawakuukan.com/index/…index.html

The sites are Japanese, but you can see some photos and rates. Since I’ve never lived in Okinawa, I can’t tell you which place to go. I think the best way to find nice manicure/pedicure or haircut places is to ask other women living in the base. They must know where to go. You may want to make a reservation in advance if you decide to go.

Take your daughter to Cocok's for a truly unique manicure and pedicure in a beautiful relaxing setting. The lounge chairs are big and comfy and overlook the west coast beach and seawall of Okinawa. They have a full bar or she can sip on the fresh ice cold tea. The nail art is amazing, I go every other month. The ladies there are fantastic, polite, all about excellent service and really know how to make your time there a relaxing fun experience. I highly recommend it. Full pedicure about $40. Call them at 098-921-7280. They are located off of 58, at the traffic light south of Kadena Gate 1 on 58 turn and head straight on the road until almost to the water. Cocok's is on the right, second floor, between a dive shop and an outdoor restaraunt/bar. She will love it.

Thank you, thank you! That is what I was looking for! Now I'll ask another questions. Do you know a good hair salon?
