Stops? Fukuoka to Tokyo via Miyajima, Osaka and Kyoto

Hi all.

We're travelling to Fukuoka at the beginning of April to see my brother We're spending 18 days in Japan in total. 4 days in Fukuoka with my bro and then travelling up to Tokyo, making stops along the way.

Where would you suggest we stop? See the title for the current stops we want to make.

We typically like places that are pretty to look at (hence travelling in cherry blossom season!) and something different. We were thinking about Takayama, Hakane National Park and Nara.

Help, we need to book but would like some advice from someone who has been there!

Thanks in advance!

From Fukuoka to Tokyo the touristy route would be Hiroshima with Miyajima, Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, Takayama, Hakone and then Tokyo. Depending on the travelling pace and personal interest there are other places and side trips along the route. Also by staying longer in Fukuoka you can take in a bit more of Kyushu. From Tokyo popular side trips can be done to Nikko, Kamakura and Yokohama or you can venture further north to the less visited yet beautiful Tohoku region.

The exact dates of visit have some bearing as well. Osaka and Kyoto are of course popular sites for cherry blossom during early April. If you can be there on Apr 11-12 Yoshino is a highly worthwhile side trip for its sakura festival with colourful parade.

Another place for a colourful Japanese festival is Takayama during its spring matsuri on April 14-15.

Between Takayama and Tokyo if you are travelling during the latter part of April, two unique and beautiful destinations are the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route which is scheduled to open on Apr 16 and Kamikochi whose access is open on Apr 20.

Nikko is a very popular side trip from Tokyo but do take note that part of Toshogu is going to be renovated and may be under scaffolding starting April this year.

There is a ton of cool places around Kyushu, in my opinion. You might wanna do that, then head to Kyoto/Osaka. Go to this link - http://map.welcomekyushu.com/

If not, then you should really go to Ainokura and Shirakawa-go Historic Village. They are within reach of Takayama.

Then go down to Minami Alphs in Yamanashi - http://goo.gl/maps/YdnFu

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the information so far. We're thinking that the spring festival in Takayama would be great so have added that in. The kyushu stuff is really useful too, I'll mention that to my brother and he can plan that!

Other questions off the back of your answers: Are all the places you mentioned accessible by public transport? We're getting the JR rail pass and won't have a car.

So, Takayama down to the Kofu place (near Fiji), is that possible by public transport?

Thank you both!!

Yea, I really like that Kyushu site. They really need to make a Honshu version.

Going back to your questions... well, I just assumed that you guys would be driving since you are going way into the mountains of Takayama... so it may not be easy.

There is a highway bus from Takayama to the closest stop near Ainokura, but it'd take you 6hrs then you have a 90 minute hike from there. (6,400yen)

As for Shirakawa-go Historic Village also, there is only a highway bus available... only 90 minutes away though. (2,400yen)

Technically speaking - yes, you can just take JR trains to get to Kofu/the foot of Minami Alps area from where you are going to be. Looks like you'd make a transfer at Fuji Station - http://goo.gl/maps/dFgUA but I've never done that before.

I highly recommend going to Shirakawa-go though. Who would think that there is a UNESCO World Heritage deep in the mountains of nowhere Japan? http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/734
