Can I use the JR Rail Pass for travel on the Shinkansen from Fukuoka to Kagoshima ?

Please use Hyperdia to verify, but I believe you're ok - 520 minutes more or less, 1210 km. A number of changes, depending on your departure time.

trip is 96 minutes on the Sakura trains, 288.9 km and covered by rail pass, from hakata to kagoshima chuo

Shinkansens run between Hakata (the main station for Fukuoka) and Kagoshima-Chuo in under 90 minutes. JR pass covers all but the MIZUHO (the fastest of the Shinkansens on that route)

Johnb121-you are getting 520 minutes because you are looking at the wrong station. The major city of Fukuoka station is Hakata--the station named Fukuoka on Hyperdia is in a totally different region of Japan
