Kyushu in march with tweens?

We are planning a return trip to Japan in early - mid March, and will be spending 4-5 days in Tokyo, where we used to live as a family. We also wanted to work in some time (3 days) someplace we did not get to go when we lived over there, and thought Kyushu miught be a fun possibiliy.

Is the weather decent then? Looked like it might still be quite cool, so resort areas might now be fully functioning?

Can anyone recommend nice places to stay and fun things to do at that time of year?

Should we try to rent a car (with English Navi!) or just go one place any rely on public transport?

Or is there just some otehr place in Japan we should consider going? We thought of spenign one night a a lovely ryokan in Shimoda, but didn't know how to fill 3 nights.

We were in Kyushu during the same time frame and though we did encounter snow between Aso and Takachiho, weather was quite pleasant and we saw lots of lovely tulips in Huis ten Bosch which bred a sign of spring.

There is so much to see and do in Kyushu that it could take weeks for an in-depth exploration. For just 3 short days out of Tokyo I don’t think it’s worth the effort to take the long journey down south. Shimoda together with other sites in the Izu Peninsula should be a better choice for a more relaxing excursion out of Tokyo.

Thanks -- you may be right. Might Shikoku be a good option (we have doen the Honshu side, including Kurashiki? We have done Shimoda before, and I was really looking for some new options.

Shikoku still sounds too far for a short 3-day trip from Tokyo. It is “smaller” in size when compare with Kyushu but it still has a lot to offer. We’d been there twice totaling almost 3 weeks and still haven’t seen all we want to see.

If your base is in the Kansai area I would recommend a self-drive road trip in the Kii Peninsula. From Tokyo the Izu Peninsula seems to be the best option if you haven’t been to the rest of the peninsula besides Shimoda. Not as well-known among foreign visitors is the region around Chiba Prefecture and the Boso Peninsula which may not be a bad idea for a few days out of Tokyo. Slightly further north yet conveniently connected by direct JR is Sendai which would be an ideal base for a taste of the lovely and less frequented Tohoku region. Without changing hotels you can do side trips from Sendai to popular Matsushima, Yama-dera and Akiu Onsen enjoying a more relaxing 3-day excursion from Tokyo.
