Nara Walking Tour--Great Experience in Nara

We just had an excellent day with Nara Walk (Narawalk.com). The guide Ken was friendly and very educated (with education in japanese history, english, geography and linguistics) and added so much to our walk through town (not to mention finding an ATM with the Mastercard logo). The company, Nara Walk, is difficult to find (the brochure was not at the information center, only from our hostel), so we thought posting the information here might be helpful for others planning on a Nara visit. As to Nara itself, it is a wonderful city, just the right size for exploring "old" japan as well as lovely ryokans and hot baths.

We stayed at Guesthouse Naramachi, available on Hostelworld.com or the Hostel Hero app on the iPhone. Would also highly recommend this hostel.

Thanks for this great post. Did you do the standard 1/2 day walk? They have a few on the website. We will only be there for the day (coming as a day trip from Kyoto). Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Hi, yes, we did the standard half day tour, and we also had just a

day and a night there. Ken also showed us Nara's restaurant options on the way through town so we had some good ideas by the time dinner came around. It's also Nara's anniversary this year (like 500 or something ridiculously old) so it's a good time to go--have fun!

Hi there, I was also there in Nara last May 7th, and also did a half day walking tour, but we actually finished at around 3PM because its raining so it slowed us down.

The deers are adorable but they snatched and ate my map!!! So we resulted to just following where the other tourists will go and follow the signs as we see one.

I did Nara on a day trip from Osaka though.

We also did a narawalk-tour with narawalk.com in May 2010. The guide mayumi sekiguchi started talking to us in the train station. She offered a long and a short tour and we decided to take the "short one" which should have lasted about 3 hours, but actually she really took time answering all our questions, so it took longer. She was very educated and spoke very good English. Also she was very nice and a wonderful person to spend time with. We can only recommend her!
