Mifi/Pocket Wifi Rental

Hello Tokyo Experts,

I am planning to visit Tokyo this coming summer and I would like to rent a Mifi/Pocket Wifi during my stay in Tokyo so that I can keep connected to the Internet.

Any recommendation?

Thanks.

Mifi(with 700MHz band) does not work in Japan. Mifi is leasing out for travelers to US at Narita A/P.

Our LTE waves are either 2100MHz (KDDI and NTT Docomo) or 1800MHz (E-Access). LTE Pocket WiFi rental is available at Narita:

I am sorry Platinum Band (700MHz) in Japan is still busy for cell phones. It is estimated that NTT will begin 700MHz band LTE in 2015.

Our LTE is much faster than AT$T and Verizon with 75MHz bandwidth. Please enjoy the fastest LTE service.

I am sorry 75MHz bandwidth should be 75MBPS.

I am sorry my confusion of MiFi: if your Mifi means Mobile (W) iFi, there is another:

Novatel MiFi products do not work in Japan.

I am here in Japan right now. I rented from Global Advanced Communications.

It's fast and works really well. Service has been excellent. I had my unit shipped to my hotel in Tokyo, and it was waiting for me there. Since then, I have gone to Matsuyama (where I am working), and it works great. I have used to a lot for Google maps and such in town. I highly recommend this company and their service. In fact, I will probably use them again next year.

I rented a pocket WIFI from Japan-Wireless. Although I placed the order almost 3 weeks in advance, it failed to arrive at our first hotel stop. I emailed the company and it took them another day to respond. They blamed the delivery problem on the Japanese postal service! I think they just forgot to send it!

The unit finally arrived at our second hotel - 4 days late. I am still waiting for a refund for the 4 days! On a positive note, the unit was good - super easy to set up, very small, it came with an extra battery and didn't take too long to recharge. Battery life is short though, so turn off the unit when not in use. Connectivity varied by location, it connected well in our hotels and other locations in the bigger cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, etc). However the connection was dicey in smaller town (Shirwagako, Takayama). It won't work on the trains, except on the bullet train between Hakone - Tokyo. The price was about $80. USD for what should have been 12 days. Well worth it for the convenience!

I wouldn't rent from this company again, since they are obviously not reliable. However, due to the lack of WIFI in hotel rooms in Japan, I would definitely rent a pocket wifi device on my next trip.

Hope this helps!

POCKET WIRELESS ROUTER

At a computer/electric shops, I saw some small "router" connections which enables to change wireless from hotel's wired connection. I think it is cheaper than the long day period's rental.

Rented a portable wifi from Global Advanced also and it was waiting for us at our hotel. I wanted to rent an iPhone but they were all out and the wifi worked just fine. We didnt need an extra battery either, just charged it every night.
