Is JR Pass worthwhile?

Thanks in advance for the advice. Arriving NRT 4/6/13. 2 nights Tokyo 2 nights Kyoto 2 more nights Tokyo then back to NRT. Should I buy the Pass?

If Kyoto is your only destination beyond Tokyo, then opt for a combination of Suica-NEX and Japanican e-voucher. The total cost of this package is essentially 24,500 Yen (plus no more than 210 Yen should you be charged the handling fee of Suica). On the other hand, a JR Pass costs 28,300 Yen already. That means you would still get around 3,500 to 4,000 Yen to pay for local rides. Even if both work out to be the same, you can take the fastest and most frequent Nozomi train (unreserved seating) using Japanican, which you cannot do with JR Pass.

The japanican voucher is best value if only doing the Tokyo-Kyoto round trip and you get to take the fastest, most frequent trains.

If you add even a single extra long distance train journey then the pass becomes the better deal.

You should buy the pass and use it on NEX both ways and of course, Tokyo--Kyoto round trip. You can also get to almost all destinations within Tokyo using JR lines. JR has extensive networks throughout Japan, so any side trip you may want to take will most likely be covered by the pass, too.
