What fun things can kids do in Tokyo Winter 2012/2013?

We're taking a family holiday to Japan in January 2013. Our daughters are 6 and 7 and english speaking. We're hoping to learn with our daughters about Japan's culture new and old. We're all foodies too.

Besides Tokyo Disneyland, what kind of activities can we expect to do and what is unmissable? We're interested in free activities or costly ones - we want to see as much advice as possible.

We'll be there for a week before heading to a ski resort for a week.

Also wondering if anyone has advice on getting a casual babysitter for a night so that my husband and i can go out for dinner and karaoke :)

Thanks.

Tokyo can at times seem like 10's of thousands of people rushing to or from work or to the shops. So maybe looking for things that keep you out of the pedestrian crowds such as the Sumida river cruise:

Haven't seen this myself, but there is the Childrens Castle complex:

Also many nice open parks that are centrally located.

There are many many things to see and do in Tokyo for free or for a very low cost.

There are many parks, temples and shrines that will show the local flavour and culture of the city, and also offer lots of authentic foodie opportunities in the surrounding areas as well.

Even a visit to a supermarket, market (Ameyoko & Tsukiji) and the kitchenware area would be a great insight into the background of the food culture without having to spend any money.

Japanese gardens are also very good alue and normally cost only a few hundred yen. My favourite are Rikugien & Koishikawa Korakuen but there are many more.

Another idea perfect for the family is a special pass called the Grutt Pass that costs JPY 2,000 for adults and provides access to about JPY 30,000 worth of museums, galleries, zoos, aquariums etc. It also offers a discounted entry to many other places. The pass is valid for 2 months and comes as a little booklet that they take a coupon out as you visit each spot.

The current webpage is valid until March 2013. Best value in Tokyo and you can even buy a combo pass with a 2 day subway ticket as well!

Enjoy your time in Tokyo!
