Fly in to Haneda or Narita Airport?

I understand that SQ will fly into Haneda Airport come October. Apart from the distance to the city centre, any other advantages of flying into Haneda?

Cheers :-)

If you can fly into Haneda without paying hefty extra costs then fly into Haneda, it's actually in Tokyo and time to city center is pretty fast.

"Apart from the distance to the city centre"

For Tokyo, that is kind of like saying, "apart from the wealth, any other advantages to money?" If you can get a flight to Haneda without paying through the nose, grab it and don't let go. Immigration might also be faster, with fewer international flights. If you have to spend a night in Singapore, enjoy the break....

Haneda is the way to go if you can. Its close to the city, about half the time or less.

Also great for domestic transfers, Haneda is the busiest airport in Asia, most domestic Japan flights.

Currently the international terminal at HND is much less busy than NRT, which enables you to clear immigration and customs very quickly. It's much closer to city center from HND than from NRT, as you know.

Still new SQ's schedules to/from HND don't seem to be that desirable especially if you use public transport.

SQ634 SIN1540 – 2305HND 77W D

SQ636 SIN2220 – 0545+1HND 77W D

SQ633 HND0015 – 0640SIN 77W D

SQ635 HND0655 – 1320SIN 77W D

If you fly into HND at 23:05, you are likely to struggle to find the way to get to your lodging in central Tokyo on public transport at that time of day. Also catching the 6:55 departure will be difficult by public transport, as this is an international flight. On the other hand the other half of flights seem to be conveniently scheduled.

Flight schedule aside, Haneda is definitely the preferred airport. Immigration is much quicker. You also get to central Tokyo much quicker while paying less. Note that the Haneda International Terminal is basically just a large temporary building. Most facilities are located at the domestic terminals. You have to take the airport's free shuttle bus to get to those terminals that will give you access to trains. This is a bit of a pain as you will have to haul your bags onto a somewhat crowded bus.

Would certainly be a better option than Narita, esp. if you transfer to/from domestic flights.

Be sure to utilize domestic air passes at bargain prices.

In fact, plan this trip to include a few more remote areas that can be reached more quickly by air than by train.

Keihin Kyuko Railways will open a new station connected to the new international terminal this October, which will eliminate the current necessity of using the shuttle bus between the international and domestic terminals when you take the train.

The new international terminal will be able to handle A380 services if there is a demand.

I will also be flying into Haneda on SQ in november. The timings of the inbound flight is ok but the timings of the outbound flight is not good, so I chose to fly out of Narita.

I think tokyo monorail is extending to the international terminal tomorrow. http://www.tokyo-monorail.co.jp/english/

So easier access to Hamamatsucho ??

Easy! Just hop on the monorail from Hamamatsu-cho.

If you have a lot of luggage, it's close enough to take a taxi -- without selling your first-born!

Yes that is a kicker, I think one of the agreements is using Haneda during times Narita is not normally open, so timing wise you might have trouble finding transportation options. Also pricing for tickets might be better for Haneda.

Narita Airport will have a new rail link with the New Skyliner (Narita Sky Access) which can take you into Central Tokyo (Ueno/Nippori stations) within 36minutes. Combined with a connection you can be in places like Shinjuku approximately the same amount of time you can to Haneda.
