Nikko in December

Trying to arrange a trip to Nikko around the middle of December from Tokyo. Will it be too cold to enjoy visiting the sites. Should we take a tour bus from Tokyo for a day visit or should we take the non-Jr Train (fogot the name of the train co.) and buy a world heritage pass and do it ourselves? Thanks. Any help would most appreciated

If you can find an English tour and feel you need that input (ie guide) go for it. We visited Nikko in late March and had a great time on our own. You can buy all the tickets you need in Nikko. If you have an active JR pass, you can use it to reach Nikko and arrive a few blocks from the Tobu station. I found Nikko extremely easy to navigate with my Fodor's and Frommer's guides.

December will be chilly, but not frigid. I just went through a similar exchange with another TA member last week. Feel free to ask any additional questions.

Thanks, we will use the heritage pass which includes rail tickets from Tokyo. Now thinking about spending the night in Nikko or just going up for the day.

We spent two nights there to allow for a full day there. One overnight should be sufficient, unless you are good about getting an early start and don't mind a long day

Nikko in December could be cold, particularly once you get up to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls. However, seeing that you are from Idaho, it really shouldn't be too bad for you.
