Self-drive trip in Hokkaido - 8/9 to 8/16

We are doing a self-driving trip in Hokkaido this summer, and are considering different routes. This is the second week of a two-week Japan trip. We are spending the first week in Tokyo.

So far, it seems flying Tokyo- Chitose is way cheaper than any other airport in Hokkaido. Also, we don't want a car for more than 5 days, to save some money. So here is what we have so far:

Day 1: Chitose to Kushiro

Day 2: Kushiro to Abashiri

Day 3: Abashiri to Asahikawa

Day 4: Day trips to Furano and Biei from Asahikawa

Day 5: Asahikawa to Sapporo

Then two days in Sapporo.

Any feedback, advise, and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. We really have no idea about lodging for this trip, so any advise on that would be particularly helpful.

Thanks!

Jose

should be same price if you buy add-on domestic fare (~150USD return) or air pass (100-130 each way)

How badly do you want to go to Kushiro and Abashiri? For a short 5-day driving route there is a lot of distance to cover. Hokkaido is BIG so don’t under-estimate the distance and driving time between places. A straight drive from Chitose to Kushiro is close to 5 hrs. From Kushiro to Abashiri it is close to 3 hrs. From Abashiri to Asahikawa it is more than 3.5 hrs. And most importantly you will be missing out some highly worthwhile destinations en-route such as the Akan National Park, Kushiro Shitsugen Wetlands National Park and above all the Shiretoko Peninsula. Eastern Hokkaido alone really deserves more than just a few days for an in-depth exploration.

With just 5 days, consider driving around Sapporo and Asahikawa. Summer time is flowering season in Furano and Biei which need a couple of days to take in all. From Asahikawa you can drive to Hokuryu for the spectacular sunflower fields in Himawari no Sato. The sunflower festival there is held till August 24 this year.

If you want a scenic drive along the coast, consider doing a drive to the Shakotan Peninsula west of Otaru. In a day you can combine it with an excursion to one of the many fruit picking farms in Yoichi and Niki region.

Thanks a lot for the info, William! We are definitely going to follow your advise and drive around Sapporo and Asahikawa, and also try to do the drive along the coast. So, I'm really glad we posted our question here ;)

Would you care to recommend any places to stay around those areas? We are trying to look for something a little less city focus, but those are more difficult to find.

Again, thank you so much for your willingness to help out!

There are various types of cottage and farm lodgings in Furano and Biei. Browse through the following to take a look. The only concern is that at this late date I wouldn’t be surprise if most are already booked up.
