Need advice on driving trip in Hokkaido for 8-10days

Hi,

I'm planning a trip with my mom from 2nd Aug - 10th/12th Aug depending on the schedule.

This trip is mainly plan for her as she is getting old (70) and her dream vacation will be to Hokkaido. I can't join tour package as my mom gone thru operation on both her leg and thus she can't walk for too long or far. Especially tour package is not flexible in terms of our flight schedule and etc. And I don't want to make her feel like we are rushing to all location we are going for this trip.

She have never been to Japan and unable to tell me exactly what she want to see or experience there. Thus, she did mentioned a few things that she heard from her friend... Onsen, good local food, fruits, flowers. As for sight seeing that require her to climb, I guess we will skip this as she can't do it anymore.

As I wish to make this trip a memorable trip for her, I hope readers from trip advisor could give me some advice on how I should plan for the 8/10days. I have taken 12 days annual leave for this trip but I need to deduct a day for me to fly back to Sg. from KL as my mom stay in KL. And I wish to give her some experience in Tokyo before we fly back to KL. Thus, I might plan for 3 days in Tokyo.

Your advice is highly appreciated here!

Thanks in advance...

Cheers,

Jenn

Hi

sounds like a great trip idea - I think your mum will have a nice time.

Renting a car and going to the Furano/Biei area would be good, you can see flowers from the car and there are parking areas to get out and look.

Maybe one night at least a hotel with private onsen in the room? so she can access the bath with your help....

In sapporo I would really recomend the bike taxi system - you can rent one for one or two hours and it's an easy way of getting around to see things...the driver will wait for you.

You should book hotels soon..holiday season here and hotels get booked quickly.

Hokkaido in August is very comfortable although the other area of Japan is humid with high temperature like Singapore and Malaysia. It is nice to draw a picture on your white blank paper.

Have been to Hokkaido three times; first with the high school trip, and I made a motorcycle tour when I was a student: One circle in ten days is just about the right choice to drive in circle. My starts were Hakodate since I took ferries from main island of japan. Since you may have a flight from Tokyo or Osaka to Sapporo, Sapporo is the start of your drive.

Day 1: arrive to Sapporo. See Sapporo with no car.

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2163.html

Day 2: Pick up your car in the afternoon and leave Sapporo for Sohunkyo.

Day 3. Look up Sounkyo Gorge along Route 39 paralleled with Ishikari River. Follow on drive to Abashiri; the good vista point in summer is Koshimidzu Genseikaen; The ocean front natural flower garden. There is not English page.

your accommodation may be at lake Saroma to see sunset.

tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1120894-d…

I stayed at Lake Abashiri when I was in high school. The hotel is still existing which buildings must be renovated.

www.abashirikoso.com/world/eng/index.html

Day 4: Drive to Lake Akan via Bihoro Pass and Lake Mashu. Lake Mashu is the most impressive spot if the weather is fine. However, I hear in summer, it has fogs to block your view. Good luck!

Accommodation is the best at Lake Akan: there are a number of Hotels and Ryokans. One other attraction at lake Akan is Marimo, round moss ball naturally made in the lake.

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6801.html

Day 5: Drive to Furano via Kushiro and Obihiro: Since this is the longest day of your drive for 320 km estimated 5 hours and 30 min. You may stay at Kushiro previous night. In Kushiro, there are some low rate business hotels. If you have a chance, stop by Kushiro Marsh to see wide open area of Japan.

Day 6: Drive to Furano, popular spot, by you people.

http://www.furanotourism.com/en/

Day 7: Drive to Jyozankei Onsen via Sapporo.

http://jozankei.jp/en/about/onsen.php

Day 8: Drive to Noboribetsu via Nakayama Pass and Lake Toya.

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6725.html

if you think too much to stay at onsen towns, your accommodation may be at lake Toya or lake Shikoku or the big town Muroran.

Day 9: Noboribetsu to Hakodate via Lake Onuma. Please do not miss the night view from Mt. Hakodate (actually the hill):

Other attractions in Hakodate is exotic.

This is my tentative suggestion to circle around Hokkaido. It is basically the similar route I first traveled 50 years ago by bus and trains except Furano when speed ways were not existing. You may add up and stretch to other area or cut some if you like. If you have a concern about drop off rate of your rental car or your flight, you will drive back to Sapporo. The flight from Hakodate is limited to Tokyo Haneda or Osaka kansai(KIX).

The route map I made is the big and long address even though it is shorted:

You are changing hotel every night? It sound tiring. For a more relaxing trip, suggests to scale down. Lake Toya is really nice, can stay there 2 nights . If you plan to go Jozankei for onsen. Lake Toya covers that and more. You can visit Lake Hill Farm, enjoy the scenery and park and relax at the onsen...

Furano and Biei is nice to stay two nights too to enjoy the flower fields.

Looks ok, suggest to go lake toya. Noboribetsu is just an ugly onsen town but you have best of both world in lake toya.
