Fireworks

Day 2: Jigokutani – Bear Farm – Marine Park

By late-afternoon, arrive at Noboribetsu Ryokan

By late-afternoon, arrive at Farm Stay. Yorkshire Farm in Shintoku-cho, Kamikawa-gun. Assumes a 3 hour (?) drive.

The Bear Park in Noboribetsu is a depressing sight and is the only place in Japan that we wish we haven't been to! Admittedly it is not easy to see those animals but seeing them begging for food down in the pit is such a sorry sight that we nearly burst into tears. If you really want to see bears, try to go a bit further to Bear Mt. which is roughly SE of Furano. Though they are still kept behind fences, the park is more spacious and the environment is more natural.

william512: oh dear, i'm so glad to receive your caution. i'm sad enough when i see caged animals in zoos. will try the Bear Mountain near Furano instead. i've googled and found a "Bear Mountain Sahoro", is this the better place? Unfortunately, zoos and parks are the only way to show our city-bred kids what real animals look like. we usually go to the singapore zoo which fortunately, applies open-design concepts.

nomonomo: THANK YOU SO MUCH! these website links are very helpful.

i don't suppose you'll be able to recommend any fruit-picking farms? It seems that late-june should be strawberry/cherry picking season, but i can't find information except within packaged tours, which we won't join.

mrsDIY,

The famous cherry farms for picking is in Niki Town which is in the west of Otaru. There are some in Ashibetsu area, but they say the season is early July to late August.

Ask someone when you will be in Furano area.

Enjoy Hokkaido!

Hi mrsDIY

Yes Bear Mt. Sahoro is the place I referred in my first response. We also went for cherry u-pick around Niki area during summer time.

I'm now on vacation and do not have access to a computer/internet all the time. I'll be back home after May 10. If it is OK with you post again then and I can pass along some of my gathered references at home. Or better still, in case I miss your post, leave me a private message in my tripadvisor mail box and I would be sure to read and reply.

Happy planning.

Hi there,

How is the weather in Hokkaido during June? And may I know is it a good time to visit Hokkaido somewhere end of May/beginning of June.. I started to read and browse all the blogs and information regarding hokkaido as I'm planning to go next year.

Can you please provide me some suggestion on places to visit during end of May/beginning of June. I'll travelling with my hubby and my son(6yr old next year). We will have 9-10days. Will arrive and depart from Shin Chitose airport.

Thank You.

For a first time visit to Hokkaido using New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Otaru are the obvious choices. With 9-10 days you can venture further to include other popular destinations such as Asahikawa, Furano, Biei, Toya-ko, Noboribetsu and Hakodate.

But if you are after some seasonal highlights such as flower, late May to early June is a good time for tulip and pink moss in eastern Hokkaido.
