Ski Resort for family

We are a family of five planning to come to Hokkaidi mid December. can you advise best shk resort to suit us. We are not really skiers but will have a go, would like a resort that has fun activities in the snow such as sledging, huskie treks, snow tubing etc. Also one that preferably is no too crowded, has european apres ski restaurants. Is this all too much to ask?

Hi there

not too much to ask!

The main problem will be making sure you actually get SNOW in mid-December...recent years many resorts have had bad snow right up to Xmas week...!

The highest resorts are better - so that means Kiroro near Otaru, or Kokusai near Sapporo (no hotels at Kokusai, but many hotels 30 mins away at Jozankei).

Niseko or Rusutsu are lower...ok if you are very near Xmas...not so much if you are earlier in December.

Also high/central/eastern resorts such as Tomamu/Sahoro/Furano these are colder places.

Best family and non-ski activity resorts are Sahoro (it's Club Med), Rusutsu. Ski at Kokusai and stay at Jozankei, you are less than 1 hour from downtown Sapporo so easy to go and do non-ski things.

English speaking ski instructors mainly at Niseko, Rusutsu and Kiroro, Sahoro, Tomamu...

2. Re: Ski Resort for family

I am planning a family trip to Hokaiddo in early december and have read about visiting resorts in Kiroro instead of Rustustu for early snow on the forum.

Would appreciate if anyone could give me information to travel from Noboribetsu to Kiroro.
