If you are using Okayama as your base you can take ferry to Naoshima and Teshima from the port town of Uno. Takamatsu in Shikoku is a good base as there are ferries to both islands and on top Takamatsu Port itself is also taking part in the Setouchi Triennale. Time allowed Shodoshima is another lovely island worthy of a visit. Again there are ferries from either Uno or Takamatsu.

If you are doing daytrips to the islands, Okayama is easily reached from Kyoto by 90 min JR. Train from Kyoto to Takamatsu will take 2-3 hrs.

If you are staying overnight in Naoshima, Benesse House is the place to go for.

thank you very much for the information.

the hotel in Naoshima is fully booked so we consider ariving to Okayama(in the morning, from kyoto) leave the suitcases in the hotel and continue to Teshima, then go back to Okayama as late as possible.

the next morning - from Okayama to Naoshima and back to Okayama.

does it make sense?

are there any other good hotels in Naoshima or other island?

Doing daytrips to the islands from Okayama are feasible.

An interesting place for a stay in Naoshima is Tsutsuji-so Lodge with its Mongolian tent style dwellings. Its coastal location also offers nice sea view.

Couldn’t say about Teshima as we haven’t been there, we went to Shodoshima and Naoshima during Setouchi Triennale 2010. There were indeed crowds on both islands during the art festival, especially Naoshima and yes you can expect queues for the buses – and ferries as well.
