I wanted to post a note on here because my husband and I were just in Vietnam and had the most terrifying experience of our lives when travelling from Da Nang airport to Hoi An. We had arranged airport pick up from our hotel in Hoi An and the driver showed up at the airport to drive us to our hotel in Hoi An around 10:30pm. He did not speak much English but we were tired and happy to keep to ourselves for the drive. The drive can be quite scary as you pass many HUGE hotels and resorts along the water but on closer inspection many of these hotels are actually abandoned or the construction has never even been finished. I fell asleep in the car while my husband stayed up and kept watch of the dark drive that appeared to be taking us through the middle of nowhere. About half way through the drive I woke up to a young man (early 20's?) who jumped out infront of our car waving his arms for the driver to stop. Our driver actually sped up and swirved around the man and at the same moment we realized that there were 2 more men on scooters on the left hand side of the road and another man on the right hand side (4 total). As we swirved past the man in the middle of the road the guy on the right threw some stuff down on the road (which we later realized was to pop our car tires) and the man in the middle had a brick in his other hand. He chased our vehicle and threw the brick, aiming directly for our drivers head. The brick smashed through the drivers side window just missing our drivers head. Had the man thrown the brick one second sooner it would have hit our driver, and one second later it would have hit me as I was sitting right behind the driver in the back seat. Our driver drove about 200m up the road and then stopped the car in shock. The guys grabbed some pipes off the road and began running after our car (one jumped on the motorbike to chase us as well). We pleaded with our driver to keep driving and he finally took our advice and started to drive. As we did he realized that one of our tires had actually been punctured by whatever it was they had thrown on the road and we were not able to go very fast. Thankfully another car drove up from behind and the guys stopped chasing us. We drove about 20km per hour all of the way back to the hotel (even though the driver wanted to pull over on a side road and wait for the police for 30 min). Our hotel was incredible and we truly believe the driver was paramount in keeping us as safe as possible in the situation. Both the hotel and driver said that this was the first time this had ever happened, although you never really know. I wanted to write this not to dissuade anyone from visiting Hoi An, because when we woke up in the morning it was actually such a beautiful town. While this situation is likely incredibly rare, I think it's worth noting that this stretch of highway is very dark and deserted and if my husband and I do ever decide to visit again we will certainly not fly into Da Nang airport at night.
The worst part of this for me was not only the fact that I had been mugged in Ho Chi MInh city earlier that morning (2 thieves on a motorbike had driven up on the sidewalk, separated my husband and I by driving their bike between us and the guy on the back turned and ripped my dress and necklace right off my neck) but that since these thieves outside of Hoi An were unsuccessful, that they would likely try this again to another car. I can't bare the thought that this will happen to someone else so please be cautious if you plan to take this same trip in the near future!
