cycling arounfd Hoi An

Would like to do a day trip outside of Hoi An on push bikes. Anyone had experiences here? Thanks

Hi, it is very easy to bike around Hoi an. Almost all hotels provide bikes or you can rent one for about $1.00 US per day. Traffic around Hoi an is not bad by local standards, but you still need to pay attention as you bike. Earlier this month I biked out to the beach, easy ride and takes about 15 minutes. Enroute to the beach you can go off to the side streets to the river and bike along the river and the palm forests. I also biked out to My Son, which a quite a distance, but the road is flat and the countryside is beautiful. All you really need is a basic tour book and basic map to get around the Hoi an area. If you get lost, all you have to do is look lost and ask someone "Hoi an??" or "My son??" and they will point you in the right direction. Depending on the time of year, like in May, it is really, really hot and humid and you will need lots of water, which is easy to buy pretty much anywhere you bike. You can also bike up to Danang as Highway 1 is wide and the traffic isn't too bad, again by local standards, and you can stop at the casino, which is quite a place. Hope this is useful.

What is the distance to My Son? how long would it take to bike at a not too frantic pace?

Hi, My Son is about 40 miles from Hoi an and I left early in the morning and took my time, having to ask for directions several time, and stopping to take photos, etc. So, it took about four hours at a slow pedal to get there. I've been to My Son before several times before so I didn't go through the ruins his time. Coming back was around three hours or so and it was really, really hot. You need to drink lots of water and use lots of sun screen. Well worth doing if you like to bike. Beautiful country side and little traffic to worry about, other than an occasion tour bus. If you get a flat there are lots of repair places along the way. Let me know if you need more info.

Be warned that the quality of the average bike in Hoi An is less than bad! I would not venture further than the beach on one of those pieces of junk!

Thanks for the feedback. Jason1010 where did you hire your bike from, the quality seems to be questionable in some areas. I have communicated with Heaven and earth bike tours in Hoi An, they seem to have reasonable looking bikes but we all know about photos and reality. Their video isnt really that enticing to do one of their tours. Comment?

Lighthouse restaurant Hoi An used to have a separate operation which ran bike tours. I'm thinking of using them next year. They have a web site. Would be interested in feedback if you use them.

Sorry for the delay, but have been traveling and did not have access to a computer. Good point about the quality of bikes. I checked around in Hoi an and asked for a really good quality one. The next day the rental lady had one for me. Very good mountain bike for about $2.00 a day. Most of the time all you have to do is ask. The Ha an Hotel provides pretty good bikes free and most places charge about $1.00 for the basic bike which is fine for going local.

Steve at the Sleepy Gecko Bar hosts a morning bike tour afew days aweek but it begins with abit of local rice wine and goes seriously downhill from there. Just get a map and start pedalling there's only afew roads to get lost on and where would you end up?
