Shave?

I've heard that men often enjoy a good old fashioned straight-razor shave in Turkey. Is there a local place in Goreme that does this? A barbershop? Or should we wait until we get to Istanbul?

There are several barber shops in Göreme, so you can easily have it done here.

Here in Selcuk there is a barber shop on almost every town centre street, sometimes two or three. They are a great way to relax after a long drive or bus journey, because a head and shoulders massage is usually included. He should also trim the hair on the back of the neck and around the ears, eyebrows and nose. Try not to show fear when he burns off the hairs in your ears.

For reasons of hygeine, they now use a replaceable blade: a fresh one is broken out for every new customer.

The cost here in a normal Turkish town is 5TL. Goreme is touristic, so expect to pay twice that. In Istanbul I have paid 15 TL, but that's excessive.

DrDebi - I now see that you were enquiring on behalf of your husband & sons. My apologies for suggesting that "you", or indeed they, might have hairy ears.

I recommend that men abstain from shaving for a few days before going to the barber. If he notices that the customer needs it, he may well throw in a face-mask as well (that green, astringent stuff that cleans pores).

The whole experience should take 30 minutes at least, with a glass of tea brought from the nearby tea-house.

In Selcuk I like the two shops along the street from Ekselans Beer House and the other 3 bars on Siegburg Cad.

Maybe they DO have hairy ears, now I'm going to have to look and examine their ears! :D

Thank you for your detailed response and recommendations. :)
