driving distances and times

I am planning our family's trip to Turkey next spring, and I am looking at getting from Islamar (near Kalkan on the Med) to Goreme. Google Maps tells me it is 727 km and 12 hours on the D300.

Could anyone advise me on the state of the road? That time works out to 60km per hour, which makes me think it is not a major roadway. Does that time seem about right for anyone familiar with the roadway?

Thanks, Susan

Yes, I'd say that's probably about right. Maybe stop for the night somewhere half way.

I've just come across a couple of hotels at Akseki, which is about half way, see this thread - tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297968-i1200-k5…

Thanks - If we wanted to stop part way, the place I see most recommended is Egirdir - do you think that's the best bet? Konya seems to be right about in the middle, but I gather it is a big, somewhat uninteresting place?

Thanks again,

Susan

If you're going to take the northern, inland route (as opposed to along the coast and inland at Manavgat), then, yes, Egirdir is a nice place to stop. I've stayed there 3 times and enjoyed it.

Also there's a new hotel at Beysehir which has had good reports (although I haven't stayed there myself) - tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g2276065-d227…

Thanks for your answers so far. I guess the next question is, which route has easier driving, and which has more sites to see? My instinct is to go along the water ten turn north, but I see elsewhere that people recommend the inland route as being very attractive. (I bet there have been threads on this before, but I have not noticed them or am not looking in the right places).

Thanks!

I guess you'll have seen some of the Lycian coast from your Kalkan base, so I'd go for the inland route. Sagalassos - http://www.sagalassos.be/ - is a nice site to visit on the way to Egirdir. And after Egirdir you'll be on the old Silk Road with plenty of hans to see - http://www.turkishhan.org/visiting.htm - also there's a nice Hittite monument on the east side of Lake Beysehir - http://www.hittitemonuments.com/eflatunpinar/
