Trip Report for Goreme - Cappadocia 3 nights

Firstly we are two 50 year olds from Australia who just loved this area. We stayed in a fabulous pension called Hotel Gultekin. hostelworld.com/availability.php/…28487

This was in a very handy location, minutes walk from the bus station (street up from the large rug store). We booked all of our tours and transfers from the Neveshir airport with the manager of the hotel (Selim) who really looked after us beyond the normal. We arrived early June unpacked and walked around town which has so much to see the caves are right there. We did the Rose Valley sunset walking tour. We left around 3pm and came back in the dark. There was only 3 of us that day and we were collected by van after the tour. Easy flat walking and around the rock formations and churches all with tremendous views. Near the end you arrive at a cave where an elderly man has set up a terrace with chairs and he makes you a drink, we had the freshly squeezed orange juice to watch the sunset. Just magic.

Next morning at 5am we did the hot air balloon across the valleys. We used Goreme Balloons and was very happy with them. It is a magic site seeing nearly over 50 balloons up in the air at once and of course the scenery below.

We did the full day underground city tour – Ihara Valley. We thoroughly enjoyed the underground city and the tour guide was chatty and spoke great English.

We also did the Turkish Night which includes all your drinks and food and the dancing was great to watch. My husband of course was called up to do his thing with the belly dancer. All great fun. The night kept going with others we met from the hotel – lovely girls from USA and Canada and we danced on at Bedrock Cafe back in Goreme.

We found throughout our trip to Turkey (which was 4 weeks) that the people are all really really friendly and helpful and give great service and the staff at Hotel Gultekin was no exception.

We left this wonderful town by using the Metro late night bus to Antalya. Which I can highly recommend. The buses in Turkey are all modern, clean great comfortable seats and the best part is the host that is on board giving you drinks and snacks and sometimes icecream – all part of the fare.

We will be in Goreme in late September and were wondering how many days to spend in the area. We enjoy outdoor as well as cultural activities. Are 3 full days sufficient?

Great report!

Three full days would be okay, but stretch it to four if you can, there really is so much to see and do in this amazing, unique area.

Lindylou, I was interested to read that the Rose Valley tour was easy and flat walking. Did you find Ilhara easy, too?

Every walk we have done in the area over two visits has been very, very quick with little time to appreciate the scenery for watching your feet!

Hi heidotheroad,

We did the Rose Valley last year and it was not very difficult or steep, you can easily walk along the path. And I´m older than the OPs:-))!

There has been some confusion, because there is the Red Valley too, I think it is the more famous one, but we have been told that it is more difficult to walk .

Unfortunately we didn´t the Ilhara Valley tour, probably because of some tour members with any disabilities, we went to Sognali instead.

dear lebe666,

you can do prety much the same things without an orgaized tour,it will just need more time and effort since you will depend on public busses.so you can go to the underground city of derinkuyu

also on your own.the entrance fee is 15 tl (10 usd) but it will be like watching movie without sound.

there is no dificulty at all to visit all the places by your self.

with an organized tour or better with a private tour you can do the essential sites in 1 or 1 and a ahalf day and have the rest of your stay to explore a bit more of the area.there many tours beginning with only a charge for the tour to all inclusive.

dont forget to take a hotairballoon flight!

Hiking the Ihlara Valley is mostly an easy, flat hike. Heat is more an issue than the terrain, imo. There are a few steep climbs into caves & up/down mountains which could be tricky for some, but you're welcome to opt out and wait at the base of the hill or in the van.

Glad you had a good trip, SLL!
