We want to take the overnight train from Istanbul to Ankara then go straight to Goreme. Is this a good plan or is there a better sleeper train option? I'm not keen to sleep on an overnight bus and the train sounds fun.

Here's some info about that train - seat61.com/Turkey2.htm#Istanbul%20to%20Ankara

The sleeper arrives Ankara at 08:00. I'd do a bit of sightseeing in Ankara - e.g. the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations and maybe the Ataturk Mausoleum, before getting an afternoon bus to Goreme - there's a 15:00 one with Metro arrives Goreme 19:50.

We caught the overnight train 'Ankara Express' in both directions on 15 and 25 June.

Do it, it's really enjoyable, and all part of the Turkey experience.

Some tips. Don't bother trying to book the sleeper on-line from outside of Turkey. It doesn't work.

We booked via info@backpackerstravel.net. Atilla Yurttas was our contact, and he is extremely efficient. Make sure you give him as much information as you can, ie dates, time, number of Pax. We picked our tickets up on our arrival in Istanbul from their office in Sultanahmet.

The cost of two return sleeper tickets (inc agency fee) came to 120 Euros.

There are left-luggage lockers at Haydarpasa (Istanbul), and Ankara train stations.

We stayed for 2 nights in Ankara. It is a really vibrant city, and there is plenty to occupy you time. We stayed at the Deniz Atlanta Hotel, which suited us, and it is perfectly located downtown.

After checking-in at the hotel we took the metro to the Otogar (bus station), and bought our bus tickets to Urugup. Use Counter 43, cost 25TL.

When we left Ankara our bus was at 1100. The bus was very comfortable, and you get a few freebie refreshments. The bus stopped after about 2 hours for lunch (half-hour).

We arrived in Neveshir at about 1600, and the same bus did the rounds of the main drop-off points. We got off at Urgup, which was ther final stop.
