3 days in Goreme - sufficient time to take in the sights?

Hi!

We plan to spend 3 full days in Goreme to do

Ihlara valley

Open Air Goreme Museum

Göreme and the Valley of the Fairy Chimneys, Church of St John the Baptist, Rose Valley, Love Valley, Pigeon Valley, Avanos

Underground City (Derinkuyu)

Uchisar Castle, Uchisar

Mustafapasa

Selime

Would anyone have further recommendations please?

At this stage, we are debatting whether to hire a car for the 3 days or to take tours (we will be 3 travelling). A car would give us the flexibility to see the things in our own time, but a tour would probably be the slightly cheaper option.

We would appreciate it if someone could tell us if our itinerary is doable by car for the full 3 days?

Or are tours recommended instead?

Thanks lots!

We should have a rented car to do all this. Do you think we will have the time?

Hello Globetrotter,

You can really see a lot in Cappadocia in three days. The area is not that vast. A car would be easy, you can drive to all the sites and spend time as you like. Joining a tour others decide for you.

For the underground city İ highly recommend to take a local guide that you can hire at the entry. Going inside is like empty narrow corridors with no meaning, but with the explanation is so much more interesting and it all comes to life. İf you have time you can also visit Güzelyurt.

Have a great time!

Thank you for your advice. We are now thinking of giving 4 full days to Cappacdocia, by reducing a day in Istanbul, so...my next question is : is 2.5 days sufficient to see Istanbul (Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar, Aya Sofya,

Yerebatan Sarayi, Kariye Muzesi and a cruise down the Bosphorus). Would you have other recommendations for Istanbul please?

Thanks once again!

ıf you have the time you should visit the Soğanlı Valleys. Authentic hand-made linen dolls produced in Soganli and its surrounding have attracted the attention of the tourists visiting the area and this has already become an industry. also The major churches in the Soganli valley are Karabas, Yilanli, Kubbeli St. Barbara (Tahtali).

3 days is sufficient for Cappadocia though 4 would make it more leisurely. I'd hate to shortchange Istanbul, though. It's a huge city. However, if you're more interested in natural landscapes than the sights of Istanbul then you can probably do the major tourists attractions of Istanbul in two days.

You can start one day with an early visit to Göreme open air museum (before 10, when groups start arriving), then you can walk through Pigeon valley to Uchisar, climb up to the castle and then walk back through White Honey valleys to Cavusin, visit the John the Baptist church there and walk back to Göreme through Red and Rose valleys.

On your second day you might rent a car (100-120TL) and drive to Pasabag, then go to Zelve open air museum, then drive to Devrent valley, Mustafapasa and Sobesos. You can end your day in Avanos but there is really not much to see there besides ceramics shops and there is also one in Göreme.

On your third day I recommend going on the Green tour, as Ihlara valley is about 100 km from Göreme and if you go there by car, you'd have to walk back to the car again after that. The tour also takes you Derinkuyu underground city and Selime monastery. I recommend New Göreme Tours tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g297983-d2… as they have no shopping stops on their tour and very good guides.

Globetrotter,

I am no expert, just planning our trip...I am struggling with some similar options, but FWIW, keep your 3.5 days in Istanbul...only 2.5 will not be enough for everything that is there to see/do.

3 days sounds ok in Cappadocia, and I like Mia's options. But please also look into the balloon ride, it seems to be a great experience, too.

I think for your overall itinery you should stick to 3 days in Cappadocia because 2 and a half is far too short for Istanbul.

9. Re: 3 days in Goreme - sufficient time to take in the sights?

Hello everyone,

We are changing our minds about a car hire in Cappadocia, because it seems that the places we want to see are doable by public transport or are we mistaken?

We would like to do

Ihlara Valley (dozens of tiny Byzantine churches)

Selime Monastery

Underground City (Derinkuyu)

Güzelyurt

Mustafapasa

Kaymakli Underground City

Soganli Valley

Which can be done by public transport, and which would be best done with a tour?

Would appreciate your comments, and with these, hopefully we can tie up the loose ends of our travel planning!

Thanks again!

Kaymakli and Derinkuyu underground cities can be easily done by public transport, but one of them is enough as they are very similar inside. Practically none of the other places can be done by public transport, except Mustafapasa, where there should be local buses from Ürgüp.

Ihlara, Selime and Derinkuyu are part of the Green tour. Soganli is part of the Silver (or Blue tour) but they don't have this tour very often, so renting a car is mostly the only option. Gözelyurt is not part of any tour and the only way to go there is again renting a car or taking a private tour.
