Cruise ship call at Kusadasi - what to do besides Ephesus?

We are calling at Kusadasi in September and have been looking at the various excursions on offer through our cruise operators. Not that interested in Ephesus - once you've seen one old ruin, you've seen them all!

Friends of ours who stayed in Kusadasi several years ago tell us it is quite lively so we're not sure what to expect. We've been to Turkey numerous times and normally stay in Kalkan on the Med coast, but have been to Istanbul and a few other coastal resorts. Didn't like Marmaris at all - we took the bus there from Turunc once and almost turned straight round and came back.

We'll probably go ashore and have a wander around but is there anything interesting nearby apart from Ephesus? We're not beach people so that's out. Do you get pestered a lot by restaurant owners etc? That would put us off - we always say if our first visit to Turkey had been to Marmaris we would never have gone back! Are there any smaller resorts nearby that we could get to by bus or taxi?

Thanks Canmom - we've seen so many ancient sites in Turkey! I know Ephesus is probably the best of them all but we can't face 3 hours walking around in the full sun. Selcuk sounds interesting - may well just try and organise a taxi and go there instead.

The National Park is gorgeous. You can avoid the beach and picnic amongst the trees and admire the wildlife

You can visit Sirence or Kirazli villages and see a bit of village life, buy some olive oil and taste some wine.

You could go to Radon spa and spend time at the hot springs, have a mud face pack and a massage.

You could visit Degirman restaurant and watch the baby turtles swimming and enjoy a walk around the grounds before visiting the gift shop.

You could visit a market if you are there on a tuesday, wednesday or Friday.

Lots of lovely activities.

Ephesus should not be missed and is not really just 'another old ruin' it is truly amazing. There are many other historical and other sites that can be missed in Turkey but Ephesus is really worth the effort in my opinion.
