Djerba July 2012 any info appreciated

Hi all;

We have booked a family holiday to Djerba for 2 weeks July 14th staying at El Mouradi Menzel.

Can anybody reccommend any trips or things that are a "must" whilst we are there?

Also read about horse/camel rides along the beach anybody give me a rough price guide please.

Horse and carriage rides does anybody know how much these are we have 2 girls who are horse mad.

Thanks in advance.

With it being quite small Djerba is easy to get around - depending how old your children are will depend on what you want to do. Some of things available are :- hiring bikes, quad biking, easy to walk around - not much traffic on Djerba, there's a crocodile sanctuary - which is fascinating never seen so many!! it's also got a house/museum in it where you wander round,, you can hire a car - again if wary of driving its very quiet, and go to the Guellala - its the main pottery area with a lovely museum with fab sites - its probably on the only hill in Djerba, you can also go across the causeway to Zarzis a very nice town not far away. There's Houmt Souk the main town on the island with lots of shopping and markets.

There will be horseriding etc - not to mention the trips offered by yor operator

Hope that helps a bit

Hi Tunisiamad;

thanks for your response and for the tips our girls are 17 and 13 prob last family hol with our eldest. We have done Sharm and Hurghada and turkey but this year we thought we would do Djerba.

Hiring a car sounds good to visit the mainland and extra sight seeing.

thanks again

Despite what the Guide books say, Fadloune Mosque is now firmly locked and closed to non-muslims.

If you are interested in Roman sites then Gightis is well worth visiting. Take the ferry from Ajim to Jorf and it is a short drive down the road along Gulf of Bou Gara, just after the settlement of Bou Gara. It is a lovely setting on the coast with palm trees. There are lots of different bits of remains to explore. It doesn't get a mention in the guide books and gets few visitors - the custodian says he may get one lot of visitors a month if he is lucky. It is well worth while searching out
