Currency exchange

Hi everyone

I'm meeting up with my sister who lives in South Africa and coming to Patong in less than two weeks.

We have been advised to bring our own currency and not to use the ATMs.

Is it possible to change up South African Rand into Thai Bahts easily from the currency exchange booths in Patong or would we have to go a bank?

I'm coming from England and assume I can exchange English pounds to Thai Bahts easily

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Instead of South African's Rand, try to get USD 100 bill. You will get better rate.

Online rates you can check from link below:

Do your sums first ... you will then pay the "spread" (the difference between the buy and sell rate) twice ... once when you buy your US dollars and again when sell your US dollars for baht.

Technically yes, but practically no. Rest your choice.

Buy and Sell spread in 100 USD bill is least as low as 2% (buy rate 30.75 sell rate 31.40)

South African's Rand spread is 35% (buy rate 2.44 sell rate 3.49).

You can check current rates from this link.

Hi Doreen,

Just looking for confirmation that the ZAR notes were exchanged in Thailand without issue as we will be doing that if all went well. Thanks.
